I ended up being pleasantly surprised by this, although I had to think about it – and having to “think about” a zombie story at all is an unusual thing, so that tipped me to 4 stars. This is certainly not the best writing in the world, but it works because of the character’s broken, underdeveloped mind. Jango really is about as messed up as the zombies, and seeing a zombie apocalypse from an abused/PTSD perspective was very interesting.

The book’s pages are filled with enough gore and fighting and sex and the usual zombie stuff to keep the average zombie-enthusiast reading. There are several clever bits of writing that are quite funny, too. But really, the depth of exploration into Jango’s troubled psychoses is what kept me reading. The author did a phenomenal job of setting it up so that a zombie apocalypse is the perfect environment for Jango – he has an outlet for his violent tendencies, he doesn’t have to interact with people much anymore, he can follow his own moral code, etc. Then there’s the unexpected romantic relationship that adds a dimension to the story, and – more than just an excuse for a sex scene – Sonya becomes a catalyst for change.

Although the writing at times seems a bit rough, the portrayal of this character is great. This story certainly focuses more on Jango than it does on the actual zombie apocalypse, but I liked the direction the author chose – staying in the mind of this very troubled individual as he works out his inner demons while fighting outer monsters. I’m curious to see where Jango goes from here.

The Road To Hell Is Paved With Zombies (Zombie Fighter Jango) (Volume 1)

I'm really glad I found author Cedric Nye on Facebook. I like him - he's a very down-to-earth, honest individual, who clearly cares about his friends, his fans, and his fellow authors. Then I read his first book, The Road to Hell is Paved with Zombies.

And... I'm blown away. Zombie Fighter Jango is the most real, gritty, tortured character I have come across in a long, long time. I've read literally hundreds of post-apocalyptic books. I'm very picky about what I read - there's just not enough time in the day - and I only leave reviews when I am super-excited about an author.

I don't do synopses in my reviews - no spoilers here! Suffice it to say that I will read ANYTHING written by Cedric Nye. He is my new favorite author.

Fast paced, edgy, thrill ride of a story. Fans of Mark Tufo will like this one quite a bit. I gave it 4 stars because 5 stars is reserved for books like The Hobbit. The author here writes about what he knows and doesn't try to over-explain, or over-analyze and still manages to develop a couple of characters you care about. I look forward to the continued adventures of Zombie Fighter Jango.
This was a fast paced, action packed story. The main character is a bit different than your normal leading character, which is a pleasant departure from most of the books in the genre. Things don't always work out well for those stuck in the zombie apocalypse and this author fully embraces that fact. I recommend this to fans of the genre.
Jango is true bad ass and has issues from both his past and present. He has honed his body into a superior fighting machine to protect himself both physically and mentally. This gives a unique advantage when the world turned upside down and inside out.

This is a recommended read.

The story is filled with hope, tragedy, love and hate, there are some funny parts to. Mr. Nye did a wonderful job of balancing all the emotional event, just as he directed the story to wrap perfectly into a tornado of feelings and Drama.
Stripped down to essentials, this is good, not so clean fun.

A bit about the main character. Jango is your not-so-average psychologically disturbed and fragmented killing machine thrust into a situation that fits him perfectly. He's fearless and doesn't at all mind killing zombies (in all likelihood because he didn't much like them before they were zombies either. And he doesn't mind killing the bad guys, because keenly aware and entirely convinced of just how much the bad guys deserve to get killed. His outlook is only reinforced by the events in the book.

There are a few main things I really like about the book. First, a lot of it is just funny. Jango is often very funny, and Nye has written him very well as a psychologically compromised hero (or anti-hero). He stands out as a very real personality, even when his ability to tackle hordes of zombies is transparently supernatural. Second, the book is great for those of us who enjoy thinking about the zombie apocalypse. Nye tackles a handful of misconceptions about surviving in the zompoc world. Buy the book and let him tell you why you should leave that sword at home and pick up a big stick. I also enjoyed the (often overly detailed) discussion of weapons and their usage in a world full of zombies.

It's a little rough reading here and there. I can only imagine that Nye was "finding his voice" (whatever THAT means), since it seems that most of the flaws in this book don't carry over to the second book in the series (an over-abundance of similes stands out as an occasional mild irritation).

Overall, this is an entertaining read and well worth the time and price. I'll be reviewing the second book shortly, as I finish it.
Having read an abundant number of zombie stories I am always pleased to find a new approach or idea. This was certainly a well written storyline. If not for the absurd dialogue I would have rated this a five. Who talks like this? I felt that maybe the authors mom wrote the story and he wrote the dialogue (assuming he is thirteen). I cringed anytime a conversation took place. Not so much the language (which was bad enough) but the actual conversations were sophomoric. I still bought the sequel. My review for that will be identical to this.
